If you want to buy a notebook that will allow you to see exactly where the computing industry is going, then the MacBook Air is a shining example of modern computing. Many of the criticisms that have been leveled at the Air are worth noting, but what you have to admire about Apple is their courage in abandoning traditional laptop hardware.
I can't imagine many of the other brands having the guts to drop the CD/DVD drive as well as the Ethernet port for wired internet surfing. However, when you really stop and think about it, many people simply don't use these things any more since wireless internet is everywhere and data is exchanged online or via a USB stick rather than a clunky old disk.
What I would say though, is the slimline design of the MacBook Air does mean you pay the price for style. The battery and memory can't be replaced meaning that any faults with these things are nigh-on impossible to correct. It also means that when your memory is no longer enough, you're going to have to invest in a new laptop, rather than new memory. Apple have been heavily criticised for releasing products that don't offer value for money in terms of longevity, which is probably fair given the potential lifespan of the Air.
However, going back to my original point, the MacBook Air is what you can probably expect from laptops in the future in terms of the hardware on offer. How long it takes other brands to drop outdated technology remains to be seen but it is certainly exciting to see what else is round the corner from Apple.
If you have already taken the plunge to buy Macbook Air then please feel free to leave comments about your experiences with the machine.
